Hojicha is Japanese green tea that has been roasted at high heat instead of steamed and dried like sencha. Roasting turns the leaf reddish-brown and gives it a toasty, nutty flavor instead of a grassy one.
Hojicha is naturally lower in caffeine than most green teas, generally cited around 10 to 20mg per 8oz cup versus roughly 30 to 70mg for unroasted green tea or matcha. It is not caffeine-free.
Powder dissolves fully into the water, similar to matcha, and works well in lattes. Loose leaf steeps and is strained out, giving a lighter cup. Tea bags are the most convenient option for a quick brew.
Use water around 175 to 185°F, well below boiling, and steep loose leaf or bags for 30 to 45 seconds. Hotter water or a longer steep can bring out bitterness.
Many people do, since it is naturally lower in caffeine than most teas and coffee. Individual caffeine sensitivity varies, so it is worth trying earlier in the day first if you are especially sensitive.
No. Matcha is unroasted and tastes vegetal and slightly bitter. Hojicha is roasted and tastes toasty and nutty, closer to roasted grain or light coffee than to grassy green tea.
