Our Story

Why we started Hojicha

We wanted a tea for the end of the day. Something warm, something with real flavor, and something that would not keep us up. Roasted green tea did that better than anything else we tried.

What is Hojicha?

Hojicha is a brand built around one style of Japanese green tea: leaf that is roasted at high heat instead of steamed. Roasting is the whole story. It destroys most of the chlorophyll and much of the caffeine, and it produces the toasty aroma compounds called pyrazines.

The result is a reddish-brown cup with a warm, nutty flavor instead of the grassy or bitter notes people associate with green tea or matcha.

What We Believe

Roast over steam

Most Japanese green tea is steamed. We build our lineup around the roasted style, because the roast is what makes hojicha gentle and low in caffeine.

Naturally low caffeine, not decaffeinated

Hojicha is not a decaf product. Roasting itself reduces caffeine-bearing compounds. Nothing is chemically stripped out.

Traceable leaf

We source leaf from growers who can tell us the harvest, the grade, and the roast method used on that specific lot.

Honest claims

We describe caffeine and antioxidant ranges honestly, as ranges, based on general tea-roasting research, not invented precision.

Quality and Sourcing

We choose leaf lots based on grade and roast quality, not on the lowest price. Every batch is roasted deliberately, and every batch is tasted before it ships.

As a small, direct-to-consumer brand, we are still building out our full supplier documentation. Real farm-level sourcing detail will be published here as it is finalized.
